Boro Lighting Family
This range of lighting focuses on creating indirect reflections against the space in our homes.
Made from 3 main parts, the block, the shade and the strap, the construction is as simple as possible. The project language started from an early model made from wood and a 3D print. When taped together, it became apparent that a strap could hold the lamp together without screws.
Casted in iron in the West Midlands, the lighting pieces naturally take on a timeless quality. Using electricity rather than coal, this process offers a lower carbon alternative to a process unchanged in centuries.
Each lamp has a monolithic base yet manage to retain a playfulness about them. Spun by hand in Uxbridge, the aluminium shades are generously proportioned to ensure a longer life. Even the lens, normally seen in theatre spotlights, is cast in solid glass. By using a military grade strap & climbing grade buckle to hold the 3 main parts together, the assembly is like buckling up a car seatbelt. Each component is made to be replaceable making it easy to take apart without the need for tools.
This paired down construction encourages fixing rather than replacing the light in years to come. The design reflects our common yearning for an era where ‘things were made to last’. These lights are unapologetically heavy duty but for good reason; longevity.
